Frozen Flashback Game
twenty-one years after being denied the opportunity to play for the state’s high school ice hockey championship, members of the 1988-89 teams at Delbarton and St. Joseph of Montvale will face off April 3rd 2010 at 2 p.m. at Mennen Arena in Morris Township.
The original state final, scheduled for late March of 1989 at Mennen, featured a St. Joseph team that was 24-2-1 and No. 1 in The Star-Ledger Top 20. Delbarton was No. 2 and 24-3-2.
A measles outbreak at Delbarton, located in Morris Township, two days before the game forced the eventual cancellation. The following week, the NJSIAA’s executive committee declared the teams co-champions. It remains the only season in the history of NJSIAA hockey that the state final was not played.

My son is starting--starting on the varsity offensive line, starting his senior year of high school, starting to shift gears from summer indolence to the discipline and demands of one of the big years of his life. As his Dad, I've learned one of the best things I can do is stand along the sidelines and keep my own counsel--try not to be a "hockey Dad". Oh yes, and I've requested a schedule change at work--so I'll be there on Friday nights, shooting the game--all the players love to get photos, especially action shots of them at their best. The season starts in shorts and flip-flops and you end up bundled in snow pants and rain gear. Huddle Up!
