    how to
  • A how-to or a how to is an informal, often short, description of how to accomplish some specific task. A how-to is usually meant to help non-experts, may leave out details that are only important to experts, and may also be greatly simplified from an overall discussion of the topic.

  • Practical advice on a particular subject; that gives advice or instruction on a particular topic

  • Providing detailed and practical advice

  • (How To’s) Multi-Speed Animations

    repair
  • Put right (a damaged relationship or unwelcome situation)

  • the act of putting something in working order again

  • Fix or mend (a thing suffering from damage or a fault)

  • a formal way of referring to the condition of something; "the building was in good repair"

  • Make good (such damage) by fixing or repairing it

  • restore by replacing a part or putting together what is torn or broken; "She repaired her TV set"; "Repair my shoes please"

    damage
  • Inflict physical harm on (something) so as to impair its value, usefulness, or normal function

  • inflict damage upon; "The snow damaged the roof"; "She damaged the car when she hit the tree"

  • the occurrence of a change for the worse

  • loss of military equipment

  • Have a detrimental effect on

    paint
  • A colored substance that is spread over a surface and dries to leave a thin decorative or protective coating

  • a substance used as a coating to protect or decorate a surface (especially a mixture of pigment suspended in a liquid); dries to form a hard coating; "artists use `paint' and `pigment' interchangeably"

"Autumn Landscape, Red Trees" Before Treatment

Before the 2006 conservation treatment of this painting at the IMA, the landscape was obscured under layers of thick yellow varnish and heavy layers of overpaint and overfill. The overpaint and overfill not only covered old damages to the painting, but also covered extensive areas of surviving original paint. The surface of the painting was very uneven, mainly from the misalignment of old tears and damages in the fabric support, but also from the heavy layers of overpaint and varnish that was on top of those old damages.

Was the yellow varnish original to the painting?
No, the yellow varnish covered the old damages and areas of overpaint, meaning that it was applied after those past restorations took place.

How can a conservator tell the difference between the original paint and the overpaint added by restorers?
There are several visual techniques that help a conservator to distinguish between original paint and overpaint. These include visual observations of the surface, often under magnification, and examination under ultraviolet illumination. Surface observations include a difference in color, opacity, and texture between the original paint and overpaint. Under magnification, it is often easy to see that the overpaint is on top of the original paint. In this painting, the overpaint also covered old damages—the damages were not original to the painting so we know that the overpaint was applied later. See the next image for information on ultraviolet examination.

What do you mean by the terms “overfill” and “overpaint”?
Those are terms used by conservators to describe fill material, which fills in the hole left by a paint loss, that has extended over the original paint. The same idea applies to the term” overpaint”. Today, conservators carefully infill and inpaint damages so that new material is added only where the original is missing.
