An inherited design
The Mercedes-Benz L206D and L306D models, in both chassis cab and panel van versions were a development of an older design that had originally been Hanomag and then Hanomag-Henschel. The petrol-engined Hanomags had originally used an engine sourced from Austin of England that came from the A70 range in the UK.
The "Bremen" vans and chassis cabs that were marketed by MB in the UK from 1972-78 were all fitted with the MB OM615 2.2 litre indirect-injection diesel engine. These vehicles had terrible brakes which left the driver only able to guess in which direction the vehicle was going to dive when brakes were applied!
The early type OHC diesel engine, whilst emplying a timing chain often suffered catastrophic failure due to the owners not strictly obeying the manufacturers engine oil- change reccomendation EVERY 3000 miles. This seems ridiculously low by todays standards, but the engine employed was a very dirty engine and the available lubricants were unable to cope with this for long periods. Sumps were often found to contain a glutinous mass that the oil pump could not cope with, when removed as a first step in the engine failure investigations that I witnessed all too often in my time at a Mercedes-Benz CV dealership in the late 1970s.

This is an almost untouched VW building. I spent a lot of time in the VW building in the town I grew up in 500 miles away...I bet I could walk through this building with my eyes closed.
I'm not sure of the specific dealership name when this would have been Volkswagen - it might have been Joe Heishman's Inc.
