Lady Trying on a Hat (The Black Hat); Benson (1904)
The display reads:
Frank W. Benson
American, 1862 - 1951
Lady Trying on a Hat (The Black Hat), 1904
Oil on canvas
Gift of Walter Callender, Henry D. Sharpe, Howard L. Clark, William Gammell, and Isaac C. Bates 06.002
In Lady Trying on a Hat, Benson chose the private act of dressing as a premise for exploring female elegance in a sophisticated setting. The painter was interested in "artistic" interiors and collected both American antiques and Japanese decorative arts. He often incorporated these objects into his motifs, here surrounding his sitter with a Japanese storage chest, a blue-and-white porcelain vase, and small silver items arrayed on a nearby table. The model, Mary Sullivan, a favorite of Boston contemporaries, wears a gauzy white daytime dress decorated by a wide pink satin ribbon. As she lifts her arm to set the hat at a fetching angle, she appears to admire herself in an unseen mirror. Her face is partially obscured by the broad brim of the elaborate black hat, deflecting attention to her active pose and to the artist's dazzling surface effects.

Day 78, 3/18/08
Artsy day.
I'm redesigning my room.
I'm thinking lots of silver, or black, 'storage cubes' on my red wall.
Getting rid of my daybed/trundle.
Turning my boring 10x10 into something with dimension.
Adding more red, putting up art, taking out my overhead lighting and buying a bunch of lamps, and creating a cool thing for up-top.
Making a wannabe nook windowsill thing. Taking an old storage-chest-bench thing, and revamping that.
