WI.CAS Steps or mounting block, Gibraltar Gate Tollhouse

Mounting block outside Former supposed Road Toll House (tollhouse status still uncertain) at Gibraltar Gate, now The Salutation Inn, The Gibb, CASTLE COMBE (NORTH WILTSHIRE District). The principal structure is thought to have been built for the Cirencester and Bath Turnpike Trust in the 19th century in the form of a vernacular house. Currently public house property with substantial changes to the original tollhouse structure on the B4039, Castle Combe to Acton Turville road. External features; two-storeys on rectangular floor plan, having a gabled roof, with walls mainly of rough stone, roofed in slate, square headed windows with casements, an enclosed porch with a square headed doorway; large inn with gabled porch and associated outbuildings. It is not clear wether any part of this large inn building was the tollhouse at this ancient cross roads. An upper floor was added to the original inn and this would obscure any sign of a tollhouse.
