Girl Scouts 75th Birthday, 1987 - #8
About this time, our neighborhood's only Cadette Leader (junior high school level - about 12-14 years old) called me and asked if I would be willing to take over as a Cadette Leader the following September since she was moving away. I agreed to help out until anyone else stepped up to be the permanent Leader.
I would get another call from her letting me know she'd opened up her garage door to all her neighbors and was letting them come and take away anything that was in there. She didn't have the energy for a garage sale so she was just giving all her "junk" away.
By the time I got there, that garage had pretty much been picked clean. I managed to take away a cracked ice chest with no seal (could still be used for storage), a tall metal water container that could not be used for drinking water (but bathing and washing clothes was fine), and a cracked Dutch oven which would no longer work as a pressure cooker on a campfire but was still a good sturdy pot for using over a fire.
Girl Scout Leaders are thrilled even with junk because we'll figure out how to use the stuff and I was grateful for those things.
Later, after this lady moved away, the service unit manager demanded that I hand over to her a "garage full" of camping equipment that she knew that lady had given to me.
I offered to give her the three broken items but that wasn't good enough. She then demanded that I bring to her house all of my family's camping gear that we had stored in our own garage. She said she was claiming it "in the name of the service unit."
Some of that camping gear had been purchased by my Dad when he was alive. Some was from when I was a little girl. The service unit manager said the "service unit" now owned it all.
I wouldn't give her what had been in my family for decades. Another strike against the little girls in my troop.
She wanted me to lose all of my family's camping gear which I was planning on using for the huge campout in June. Why?
I called our Council headquarters and asked if individuals were required to relinquish all their private property rights upon joining Girl Scouts. It sounded rather cult-like and this was the first time I'd heard that rule and I'd been a Girl Scout since 1956.
The Council said no, of course not, there was no such rule and there never has been and the service unit manager had no right to make such a demand.
At that time, the Council was making sense. They would change their minds later.
Improvement
After a self cleaning cycle of the oven, scrubbing, and three rounds of seasoning. The finish is good, liquids roll right off like rain on a waxed car.
Not sure about the spots, though. They aren't raised, it's just a different finish in those spots. Anyone know how to fix that? I also did the lid to a relatively new Lodge Dutch oven, and it looks fantastic - very uniform in color and shininess. It is a little rougher metal, and these are pretty smooth. I wonder if that's the difference.

This 3 Qt enamel Dutch oven is great for cooking, marinating, refrigeration and freezing. The color porcelain enamel on cast iron can be used on gas, electric, ceramic and induction cooktops, as well as in the oven. Not recommended for use on outdoor grills or over open outdoor flames. Not for use in microwaves. Lodge Color Porcelain Enamel on Cast Iron cookware is cast from molten iron in individual sand molds. The porcelain surface eliminates the need to season cast iron. The cast iron vessel has superior heat distribution and retention, evenly heating bottom sidewalls and even the lid. Tightly fitting lid seals in moisture. The excellent heat retention reduces the amount of energy needed for cooking. Two layers of very hard, glossy porcelain enamel are chip resistant and easy to clean. Lid knob is oven safe to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The black rim on the pot is matte porcelain, not exposed cast iron. Hygienic porcelain enamel is non-reactive with food. Although dishwasher safe, hand washing with warm soapy water is recommended to preserve the cookware's original appearance. 9 3/4" diameter, 3" deep. Island Spice
