How carpet was sold in the 1800's
In the 1800's, carpet was generally sold in 27-inch widths, and the sections joined by hand stitching. When it came time to clean the carpets, the stitching was removed, the sections cleaned separately, and then sewn together again after cleaning. At the right is an edge of carpet section. This sign was photographed at a public event hosted in the historic Patrick Ranch house at the Patrick Ranch Museum in Durham CA, February 27 of 2011.
