Pictures from Punch. 19th Century.
In economics, bimetallism is a monetary standard in which a nation uses two metals, typically gold and silver, to back its currency. All forms of legal tender may be redeemed for either metal at a statutory rate.
Bi-Metallism was the basis of the gold standard, long ago abandoned in both Britain and the USA, but whilst the USA has retained large stocks of gold (and silver) Gordon Brown sold off something like one third of British gold stocks when gold was at its cheapest.
