Victorian mourning Brooch - Rolled Gold with real portrait of Victorian woman between glass - 01
In Victorian times these brooches were made to be worn during periods of mourning and bereavement. Mourning pins and other ornaments became the height of fashion in the Victorian era, and many women actually went to great lengths to look stylish while in mourning. The woman in the photograph wears a Victorian period hat, and was most likely the person that was being mourned over.
The Victorian photograph is between two layers of glass, and the front piece of glass is beveled around the edge. Both pieces of glass are in excellent condition, with no scratches. All metal surrounding the glass is rolled gold and is in excellent condition as well, with only minor wear in a few small spots. Thee brooch pin appears to be solid Sterling silver, and still operates smoothly. This brooch measures 1 7/8” tall by 1 ?” wide. The picture and glass are encased in a gold band that slides out to change photographs.
