The barn acknowledges its vulnerability with a softness of pride...it has had its time in the sun.

The barn acknowledges its vulnerability with a softness of pride...it has had its time in the sun.

At one time the farm had been a profitable dairy but around 1932, it collapsed—along with portions of the floor in the hay loft. To my knowledge it was never repaired.
This was evidenced by the care I had to take going to and from the hay loft. Wholesale portions of the floor were missing ten, twenty foot lengths of planking that varied from eight to sixteen inches wide. They were laid haphazardly across raw timber with both top and bottom coarsely shaved and notched to fit the crossbeams. There was not a nail to be found; all the beams were fitted tightly with wooden pegs made of hickory. The two main supports that ran the entire length of the original section were three feet across and barely tapered an inch over the whole one hundred and fifty odd-foot lengths. While many of the logs that lay crosswise were rotten and pitted with centuries of worm holes and cracks that groaned underfoot (and fit to put your heart in your knees every time one of them protested like a rifle shot, raining choking clouds of straw dust on the bewildered cattle below), those two massive and most ancient of trees still held their bark intact. More than once I recall admiring in awe that whomever chose those, out of all the forest, knew what they were doing and was one of the reasons I did not fear playing in the barn quite as much as I could have.
That, and a certain odd sense of calm that seemed so strangely out-of-character with the rest of the surrounding farm. It was this last factor which prevented me from recognizing the eerie howl which at first I thought I had imagined.
It rose and fell, then catapulted to a shriek which certainly must have raised the hackles of every dog within miles. A sweat broke out on my forehead and behind my knees. Overhead, the dazzling hues had faded to tones of duller grey. At the end of the barn which was blasted open by that violent storm the year before, I saw a bruised and purple vault of sky littered with a smattering of stars and knew it was near seven o’clock.
The following entire incident became wiped from my memory, only later to return once I had grown to discover the significance of its implications. Since then it has haunted me unimaginably. I sleep no more at nights, preferring the daytime in which to repose, the blinds drawn just short of totality to allow enough light to assure me that it is day and that the things of the night are at bay.
That has been a relatively recent habit, however. There were even darker secrets the house had yet to reveal to me while I was young enough to be influenced------or fed upon.
For I believe now that it was my life energy, the clock of which was still wound tight, that was being sought. As for what dark purposes, I shall not speculate, only to say that long buried evil forces must seek the energy to resurface and draw upon even the very land under which they lie. The trees, grass, any living thing endowed of God is subject to their draining, disease ridden powers, and the younger they are, the greater the attack. The surrounding bounty of Nature, blighted to the point of being incapable of reproduction is as useless to these powers as the inert rocks and blasted soil from which no good springs. Even the life-sustaining water, stubbornly forced from hundreds of feet beneath God-only-know-what, did not come willingly. At least four dried up artesian wells dot the yard around the main building, two descending dizzying depths to a bottom full of foetid festering foulness, as accursed as the surface vegetation. It was not until the advent of modern electrical pumps that drew water from a spring a mile and a half distant down the side of the valley that the farm had a consistent source of water. But even then there were troubles. Pipes inexplicably clogged or burst, allowing the accumulate filth of centuries of sewage in the cesspool drain field above the pip to enter and foul the water. Even before the installation of indoor plumbing, the still standing outhouse’s fieldstone foundation led directly to where the stinking morass now fouls the back field beyond the rusting and rotting fence.
That unspeakable unwholesome patch of ground was now the source of another of my childhood nightmares. I recall watching the landlords paltry few remaining malnourished cows grazing that field, when I noticed a new addition. Born overnight was a shiny new black and white calf chewing tufts of horridly enriched grass surrounding the blackened pool. Indeed, this, like the poison ivy and the only other living thing thriving on the farm, a stand of poison sumac trees at the foot of the rotting filth, was the only place where the cattle could supplement the dried feed trucked in weekly with fresh greens, a necessity for the production of milk (which I never drank having seen its unhygienic source).
Then I saw that the calve’s mother had made her way around to the other side of the dank foulness unaware that her offspring had lagged behind.
