BD.BRO Stagsden Tollhouse, Bromham
Former Road Toll House at Stagsden Gate, now Toll House, No. 110, Stagsden Road, BROMHAM (BEDFORD District). The principal structure is thought to have been built for the Bedford and Newport Pagnell Turnpike Trust in after 1814 in the form of a lodge cottage with protruding front. Currently domestic property with only minor changes to the original tollhouse structure on the UC (was A428), Bedford to Northampton road. External features; single-storey on L - shaped floor plan, having a gabled, gable over bay, roof, with walls mainly of rough stone, roofed in plain tile, round arch headed windows with casements, a blocked front with a window replacing the doorway; brick chimney stack on ridge. Presume that this tollhouse dates from early 1800's after the new trust was formed. The SMR dating is based on passage of the 1814 Act that made unambiguous the status of the Bedford to Lavendon branch road; this gate is west of that junction so not necessarily linked. The old OS shows a plot of land protruding into the road at Thistley Green but house of current L shape not apparent! Question whether all the stone building was the original tollhouse on Tollgate Close. Based on comparison of photographs, the house was modernised in the 1970 and has been modernised again, probably ca 2003. The work on the front has been undertaken sympathetically. Assume that the present window adjoining the road should have been a doorway although there is no surviving evidence. Grade II Listed. NGR: TL 0015 5045: Tollhouse National ID: BD.BRO
DV.BRO02 Beare Gate Tollhouse, Broadclyst
Former Road Toll House at Beare Gate, now Bearegate Cottage, Beare, BROAD CLYST (EAST DEVON District). The principal structure is thought to have been adopted by the Cullompton Turnpike Trust in the 19th century, using an older, perhaps 17th cent vernacular building. Currently domestic property with some additions or alteration to the original tollhouse structure on the B3181 (was A38), Cullompton to Exeter road. External features; two-storeys on L - shaped floor plan, having a half-hipped roof, with walls mainly of cob, roofed in thatch, square headed windows with casements, canopied with a square headed doorway; brick stack beside road, cottage is down the slope of the old lane. This traditional 17th century Devon thatched cottage is in the spot indicated as a TG on the first OS map, though other than the name and strategic position at a junction, it has few tollhouse features. It is likely that an existing cottage was adapted for use in collecting tolls; the porch opens onto Beare Lane but there is a small window on the Broadclyst Road side. Grade II Listed.
