Roger Troutman summed up his biggest contribution to electro-funk with the 1989 proclamation "I Play the Talk Box." Both as solo artist and frontman of the group Zapp, multi-instrumentalist and George Clinton protege Troutman made the electronic voice gadget the central gimmick of his groove-heavy style. A few other simple tricks--covers of bedrock soul classics, chicken-plucking rhythm guitar so hot it sometimes threatened to steal the show--helped keep his barely changing but hook-savvy style at the forefront of R&B radio for a decade. Having been sampled by or a guest with everyone from Dre, Snoop, and Tupac to the Beasties and Scritti Politti, Troutman continues as a presence years after his death in a murder-suicide plotted by brother and fellow Zapp member Larry. In seeking to fill a double-CD set, We Can Make You Dance stretches the Troutman catalog too far; only if you need "Talk Box," "Brother Lester," and "Play Your Guitar, Brother Roger" (or, to be fair, the long version of the Zapp benchmark "More Bounce to the Ounce") should this collection take precedence over the single-disc All the Greatest Hits. --Rickey Wright

"No, Zapp's hasn't gotten into the 'Black Arts'..."

An amazing blend of seasonings, and I don't think okra (what many outside the bayou associate with the word "gumbo") is one of them. I don't know what to compare it to, it's just really good. I suggest you hunt this flavor out since it's a limited edition... got mine at Cost Plus World Market.
