All kitchens need a funnel, and this one transfers both liquids and solids between containers. Amtrak U.S. Army Troop Kitchen Car converted to short baggage car # 641, located in the SCL railroad yard at Saint Petersburg, Florida, 1974
During 1973, Amtrak received for free, some twenty year old U.S. Army Troop Kitchen cars that were 54-1/2' long, built by the SLCC (St. Lous Car Company) during 1953, of which 83 were built. Many of these cars were converted to short baggage cars or would be used for other services in time. The car seen here # 641, had recently been received, as indicated by it's olive drab paint scheme with a white roof and the painted out U.S. Army markings. The car was originally numbered as # 89641 when in Army service, but Amtrak removed the frist two numbers and just used the last three before rebuilding and re-numbering them into the # 1300 series, # 1300-1379. Many of these cars were eventually rebuilt for HEP service and roller bearing were installed on all axles. Some of the rebuilt cars recieved truck mounted snubbers and end bulkhead red electric marker lamps and some other special features. Of interest, this car still retained it's original conventional trucks with plain journal bearings, steam line, clasp shoe brakes, but, tight-lock couplers were present. This car is located in the SCL railroad yard (former ACL yard) in Saint Petersburg, Florida, during 1974. Five of these cars wound up being converted to HEP (Head End Power) cars numbered in the # 1290 series, # 1291-1295, and eventually into the # 680 series, # 685-689, to be used with the new Amfleet cars. This provided Amtrak locomotives (GG-1 & E60CH) that were not equipped for HEP service the ability to provide electrical power to the new Amfleet equipment. In this photo you may notice the original kitchen windows located at the far end of the car and the very large underbody water storage tank.

It was a large room that had herbs & packages hanging from the ceiling. I imagine this would be where he would hang plants/herbs to dry so he could use them in making medicines later. It had a nice big hearth too for cooking & there was some laundry equipment in there, as well.
