High School Tennis Spring '75
My sister Tamy gave me the money to buy the fancy racquet. I was proud of it, I gave away my Ellsworth Vines Autograph and never looked back. I didnt have real tennis shoes, couldnt afford them, so I played in Converse Chuck Taylors.
I had played football at Pocatello High, I had 4.4 speed but didnt have the talent to break into the starting lineup. I had started playing tennis in 9th grade...and tried out for the Poky team as a sophmore. I didnt play a match, I practiced all summer and came back the spring of my Junior year. I broke into the lineup playing number 3 singles...I had some success and then started playing doubles and did well there too. By the end of the season I was a starter. I practiced all summer, when I couldnt find anyone to play with I drove to ISU and hit on the wall. I was a little taken back by snobbishness of the people at the Racquet Club, we didnt have the money to join...but ISU welcomed me with open arms and I made the courts my second home. I played every tournament I could and my senior year I played mostly doubles and we won all but 4 matches...but we didnt get into the SIC tournament and we didnt get to state...but our team took 4th in State. We were good.
That summer I played my first tournament away from home travelling to the snobby Boise Racquet and Swim Club. I played the Big Sky Champ (number 6) from U of I the first round and it was an obvious mis-match. I lost the first set 6-0 to the pretty boy. But then I dug in we stayed on serve and I got a service break and won the second set 7-5. This was a college kid, a conference champ! We stayed on serve in third but at 5-5 I realized that I could beat this guy and got tight, I lost 7-5 in the third but the match left an impression...Idaho State had someone scouting the tournament. When I got home Charlie Fenske didnt offer me a scholarship...but said I could walk on. He said that Idaho State was adding tennis as a varsity sport. That fall I showed up at the courts and beat just about everyone in sight but didnt make the team. I sat out a year but continued to work out with the team. Charlie asked me back in the fall of 76 and I worked my way up the ladder to number 4! I had arrived, I made the team and finished 12-12...in doubles we finished 16-6! I started every varsity match and lettered as freshman...something that hadnt been done at Idaho State. What gave me an edge in those days was blistering speed, I chased a lot of balls down and I also had a punishing forehand that I love to smash deep cross court.
