Protest and agit prop don’t faze the management at ExCeL. They are simply too used to it. As stagers of the biannual DSEi exhibition (the Defence Systems and Equipment International, or the arms fair) they have to be. As well as the routine marches and crowds of chanting, placard waving, conscientious objectors the arms fairs flush out those gangs of imaginative subversives who turn protest into an art form, staging theatrical happenings to shame and humiliate their targets. Clarion Events, who run DSEi, are also responsible for less controversial events like the Horse Show, the Sprit of Christmas Fair, and Destinations – the Holiday and Travel Show. Their involvement with DSEi makes even those most innocent and mainstream events a potential target for protestors. At their Baby Show held at the ExCeL, members of the Campaign Against Arms Trade dressed in nappies and sucking large pink dummies, carried plastic machine guns and rockets whilst posing for photos with visitors to the show who wanted to demonstrate their solidarity for the ‘Mums Not Missiles’ message announced on their placards. More extreme are the Space Hijackers who describe themselves as “an international band of anarchitects who battle to save our streets, towns and cities from the evils of urban planners, architects, multinationals and other hoodlums.” At the 2003 fair they boarded the DLR trains suited, booted and braying like archetypal arms dealers, infiltrated themselves amongst the real dealers and then tried hawking prosthetic limbs, (arms only, visual pun) from their briefcases to their captive audience. Two years later they were back, allegedly concerned over trader’s phallic obsessions with rockets and guns they were attempting “to sell sex toys to the dealers to make up for their lack of ‘weapons capabilities.’" In 2007 they launched their most ambitious stunt when they auctioned a Saracen tank right outside the ExCeL during DSEi. The Hijackers somehow contrived that day to get not only a tank but an armoured personnel carrier to the front steps of the exhibition centre. Whilst a sound system pumped out music, near naked girls in bikini bottoms and brown body paint writhed around the tank as a hijacker with a megaphone invited bids from a bemused crowd of bystanders. After rejecting several bids in kind (including an i-pod, a squat in Hackney, and ‘my first born child’) the Hijackers knocked down the tank for a bargain ?50 in cash. Police and exhibition organisers, ironically, labelled the auction ‘irresponsible’.

What can I say? Film cameras broken (although I won an auction for a "new" one earlier today) so I went to my new favourite stomping grounds with the D40 and the 20mm lens. It's very interesting how photographing the same things becomes very different when the equipment is radically different.
