The Six Questions
In every country I've visited in Asia (except the PRC), at some point I am approached on the street by four or five students wielding recording equipment, a notepad and a questionnaire sheet with six questions. The student with the best English ability asks me the questions while the others take notes and record the event with their cell phones. This photo is of my welcoming committee in Bangkok.
Some of the six questions are always the same: "Where are you from?", "What do you think of ?". But others relate to specific national themes. In Thailand, it was "What do you think of the King?", "What do you think of Bangkok traffic?", "What do you think of Thai food?". In Macau, one question was "Do you think Macau is a clean city?" that seemed peculiarly associated with an ongoing antilitter campaign in the city. In Japan, multiple teams of students swarmed in at once to ask the same series of questions multiple times in sequence. (Apparently it's against the rules for one team to use my answers for another team's questions).
In Thailand, the students were enthusiastic after finally working up the courage to approach a foreigner and complete their assignment. I was in a good mood that day and gave an equally enthusiastic response that must be posted somewhere on YouTube by now.
Newfields General Store
Newfields, NH
Years ago, while riding a bike through Newfields (about 15 miles from my home) I picked up a stick in my rear derailleur, which caused the derailleur to be pulled out of the threads in the frame, making the bike unrideable. I went into the Newfields General Store to call for rescue. We were relatively new in the area then, and didn't know anybody, and had no cell phones. My wife was about her own business that day, so I had to leave a message at the house and wait for her to get back home and find it. I spent about 4 hours sitting on the step where all this stuff is now before getting picked up.
About old, quality equipment:
The Campagnolo Nuovo Record derailleur that ate the stick was fine and survives to this day. The steel bike frame needed some straightening and a helicoil in the hanger, but it was in use for years after the incident also.

The Commando Edition Throat Mic allows a user to communicate using a throat mic while staying discrete with a sound tube instead of a conventional ear bud. Now even with running and jumping through the woods dodging paint, the sound tube will not fall out of the ear.Because of its slimmer design, it fits comfortably under any mask. The sound tube can be cut shorter to fit different sized ears. The Commando also includes a Weatherproof PTT (Push-To-Talk) for tough outdoor situations. Now you can play in the rain, mud, or dust and not worry about damaging your Fire Fox communication equipment.
