    sand filter
  • (sand filters) Devices that remove some suspended solids from sewage. Air and bacteria decompose additional wastes filtering through the sand so that cleaner water drains from the bed.

  • A filter used in water purification and consisting of layers of sand arranged with coarseness of texture increasing downward

  • Sand filters are used for water purification. There are three main types; # rapid (gravity) sand filters # upflow sand filters # slow sand filters

  • The oldest and most basic filtration process, which generally uses two grades of sand (coarse and fine) for turbidity removal or as a first stage roughing filter or pre-filter in more complex processing systems.

Sand Snakes

Sand Snakes

Unlike my usual photography sessions at sunrise or sunset that involve setting up and waiting to see if there is good light, whenever I am at the Sand Dunes during the middle of the day, I find myself spending most of my time chasing the clouds. I’m not quite sure what my fascination is with capturing some fluffy clouds on top of the dunes, but I usually end up wearing myself out in pursuit of them.

These sessions go something like this. I climb up the ridge of one of the massive dunes to find a good composition, but no clouds to speak of in that direction. Looking over at another ridge I can see some beautiful clouds there, so I haul myself down one dune and up the other ridge, only to arrive to see the clouds have moved or dissipated. Then I see some other clouds that look good, but there is no good composition in that direction, so I stubbornly march my way towards another dune. Repeat this cycle and you have a pretty good idea how I spend most of my afternoon.

This was one of those situations where most of the cloud had dissipated by the time I got to the ridge, shrugged off my gear and setup my camera for the shot. Just a small wisp of a cloud left to fill my otherwise boring sky. One would think I grow tired of this chase and give up, but I’m sure the next time I am there it will be much of the same…

I always appreciate your critique on any of my images, as it helps me to improve.

DIY filter adapter for kodak z730

DIY filter adapter for kodak z730

i realized that i never uploaded any pics of this filter adapter that i made for our kodak. just in case anyone wants to try themselves, here goes:
i found a shipping tube in the garage that was almost the same size as some filters i had laying around for my 35mm camera (52mm filters). the tube was near perfect size, any bigger and it would have partially blocked the light metering portion of the kodak. i measured how far the kodak lens protruded and cut the tube accordingly. the filter almost would thread into the tube but not quite. a bit of sanding on the inside of the tube and the filter threads started to grab. i had a blue colored filter that i never used so i sacraficed it , and broke out the glass to leave just the threaded ring. i threaded the ring as far as i could into the tube and ran several layers of tightly streched electrical tape around the filter and tube to tie them together. it fits VERY solidly together. the other end of the tube was too big to conect to the cameras filter tube mounting area so i had to get creative. i cut 2 thin strips off the shipping tube and cut out a small maybe 1/2 inch section of each. then i glued each strip , one on top of the other, inside the camera end of the tube and used clothespins all the way around as clamps while the glue dried. i was expecting to have to add another layer or maybe sand some off for a proper fit, but two layers provided the perfect fit. this thing probably goes on and off better than the factory made one. there you go, a 52mm filter adapter for a point and shoot for next to nothing. the aluminum tape is for that "high tech" look = ) i used this setup A LOT with the kodak and got some picturesthat impressed dslr owners, it taught me not to ever discount your work just because of your equipment.
