Polarization (also polarisation) is a property of certain types of waves that describes the orientation of their oscillations.
Light waves vibrating in one plane only as opposed to the multi-directional vibrations of normal rays. Natural effect produced by some reflecting surfaces, such as glass, water, polished wood, etc., but can also be simulated by placing a special screen in front of the light source.
light in which the electric and magnetic fields each vibrate in a single plane
A porous device for removing impurities or solid particles from a liquid or gas passed through it
(filter) remove by passing through a filter; "filter out the impurities"
(filter) device that removes something from whatever passes through it
(filter) an electrical device that alters the frequency spectrum of signals passing through it
A screen, plate, or layer of a substance that absorbs light or other radiation or selectively absorbs some of its components
A device for suppressing electrical or sound waves of frequencies not required
Canon EOS Rebel T2i High Grade Multi-Coated, Multi-Threaded, 3 Piece Lens Filter Kit (58mm) Made By Optics + Nwv Direct Microfiber Cleaning Cloth.
This Item Includes: 1. UV Lens Filter 2. Circular Polarizing Filter 3. Flourescent Filter 4. Filter Pouch 5. Nwv Direct Microfiber Cleaning Cloth. Lens filters are translucent pieces of glass placed in front of a camera lens to alter or adjust the light entering the camera and more importantly to protect the camera lens. Lens filters improve photographs by giving photographers control over light and allowing them to emphasize the features of a scene that they consider most important. This filter kit is a combination of the three essential filters no photographer should be without.UV--Film and a digital CCD are more sensitive to UV light than our eyes are. This often shows up in images shot from high altitudes and long distances especially over water. This filter will remove the UV light and more importantly protect your lens from moisture, scratches, and damage. Circular Polarizer--provides color and contrast enhancement. Reflected light often shows up as a whitish glare that washes out color in an image. A polarizing filter will correct this problem creating deep blue skies. It also removes glare from non-metallic surfaces such as windows and water.FLD--provides color correction when shooting under fluorescent lighting. It will remove the greenish tint from the image, providing pleasing skin tones and true to life color renditions. Warranty:10 year manufacturer warranty. Made in Japan

Crystals in polarized light
Some 25 years or so ago, I had this strange hobby: photographing crystals in polarized light. Today I found an old box with some of these microscope-slides back. The crystals had degraded very much, taking up moisture from the air and recrystallizing again (and again and ....). I have a new toy (a Leitz microscope with polarization on board) and decided to have a 'second' look at them, and some had indeed developed some funny patterns. By turning the polarization-filter a wee little bit, the colors can change drastically, as you can see by comparing this picture with the next one. I don't remember the name of this chemical.

Polarized light is a pervasive influence in our world—and scientists and engineers in a variety of fields require the tools to understand, measure, and apply it to their advantage. Offering an in-depth examination of the subject and a description of its applications, Polarized Light, Third Edition serves as a comprehensive self-study tool complete with an extensive mathematical analysis of the Mueller matrix and coverage of Maxwell’s equations. Links Historical Developments to Current Applications and Future Innovations This book starts with a general description of light and continues with a complete exploration of polarized light, including how it is produced and its practical applications. The author incorporates basic topics, such as polarization by refraction and reflection, polarization elements, anisotropic materials, polarization formalisms (Mueller–Stokes and Jones) and associated mathematics, and polarimetry, or the science of polarization measurement. New to the Third Edition: A new introductory chapter Chapters on: polarized light in nature, and form birefringence A review of the history of polarized light, and a chapter on the interference laws of Fresnel and Arago—both completely re-written A new appendix on conventions used in polarized light New graphics, and black-and-white photos and color plates Divided into four parts, this book covers the fundamental concepts and theoretical framework of polarized light. Next, it thoroughly explores the science of polarimetry, followed by discussion of polarized light applications. The author concludes by discussing how our polarized light framework is applied to physics concepts, such as accelerating charges and quantum systems. Building on the solid foundation of the first two editions, this book reorganizes and updates existing material on fundamentals, theory, polarimetry, and applications. It adds new chapters, graphics, and color photos, as well as a new appendix on conventions used in polarized light. As a result, the author has re-established this book’s lofty status in the pantheon of literature on this important field.
