Tommy in Aunt Millie's apartment
Mom: That's Aunt Millie's apartment.
Me: So by this time, they've moved to Bellmore?
Mom: Right. We all had the same blue rug. Nanny picked it out.
Me: So why did they move from Brooklyn?
Mom: It was very simple. They wanted to move out near me, and they rented this apartment sight-unseen.
Me: Did this come as a shock to you?
Mom: In a way it did. For years and years Nanny and Aunt Millie drove Grandpa and Uncle John crazy because they went out looking for houses, and they would fall in love with a house, and then JUST before they were going to put a deposit on it, they would find something wrong with it, and we would all be disappointed. And essentially Daddy and Uncle John would feel bad because everyone would get excited and disappointed. And that started when I was dating...so it was five or six years. And so with that in mind, the very fact that they rented these two apartments without even seeing them built was amazing.
Me: Why do you think they kept failing to pull the trigger?
Mom: I think they were stalling for time. They just wanted to see where I settled. And then the minute I found my house, within six months, they put in a deposit for those apartments.
Me: That's kind of clingy.
Mom: Yeah. Well, I mean, they could've done worse. But they liked it because it was a mile from me, and Nanny could walk over.
Me: Oh, I don't remember Nanny ever walking to the house.
Mom: Oh yeah, she walked all the time. Probably when you were little. By the time you got older, Grandpa was retired...
