Febreze 2x Concentrated Carpet, Rug & Upholstery Cleaner Advanced Pet Solution - 20oz Bottle Safe for use in any full size deep cleaning machine including: Bissell®, Hoover®, Dirt Devil®, and Rentals Proper and regular carpet cleaning can extend the life and appearance of your carpet. This is because the primary cause of carpet wear is dirt, and any oily soils that get on your carpet attract more oily soil. In addition, typical household dust settles everywhere, including your carpet. Dirt and dust can carry bacteria, dander, pollen, germs and mold spores resulting in an unhealthy environment. Frequent vacuuming removes most particles from your carpet, helps minimize any buildup, and prevents them from being trampled down into the carpet fibers.

Chinese physicians in Samarkand, 1911

Chinese physicians in Samarkand, 1911

Another photo for my Chinese friends, together with a mea culpa, that is, I was mistaken. How? Read on …

In adding the photo of Manager Lau of the Chavka tea plantation, I said that his was the only picture of Chinese persons in all of SPG's 2000 pictures. But here is another, taken in Samarkand, of two Chinese physicians, apparently practising and selling what today we would call, "traditional Chinese medicine." That, anyway, is SPG's title for the shot – physicians, so he probably asked his translator what these guys were selling, and back comes the answer – "Doktors."

Or perhaps not. The array of bottles and so on laid out on the carpet all have a kind of factory look to them, as if the older man and his younger companion have merely collected medicines easily available in China, and travelled to Samarkand to sell them, it being, perhaps a less sophisticated market than say, Hangkow or Shanghai. Behind them we see a big chest, made of woven stuff, seemingly, so I would guess that they come down to the steps of the madrassa each morning and set up shop. But not necessarily; on the carpet are also a number of envelopes and packages, the kind of remedies that would be made up by the doctors themselves for common complaints such as stomach problems, headaches, sexual problems, etc. etc.

And if you look at their hands under high magnification, what you see is – nothing. That is, no blemishes, no calluses, no dirt whatsoever. So these guys do not make their living doing any sort of manual labour, and likely never have. They are the 1911 equivalent then, of professional men, adding credence to SPG's title. It also suggests that their business is relatively successful, since their clothes and their persons alike are clean and un-tattered, so to speak.

The guy in the background is interesting too. He didn't need any adjustment at all to make the three images of him properly register, that is, he sat absolutely still at his post at the door of the mosque or madrassa, not moving a muscle. He's also well equipped for a long stay, with a teapot, a cloth wrapping that probably has his lunch inside, a small reddish-brown cup, and a stack of texts, probably bits of the Q'ran. Is he a doorman, or simply a pious student of the book, or a guardian, making sure the sellers and buyers don't advance up the steps, but stay in their place? Perhaps a bit of all of those.

The younger of the doctors, however, moved abruptly while the second (green) plate was being exposed, and so it proved impossible to properly register his image; in the end I used a lot of the clone-stamp tool to remove, as best I could, the colour fringing on his face. The older guy moved hardly at all.

The shot is interesting in other ways too, notably the dark upper half, and the bright lower half, with SPG still managing to gather a lot of the shadow detail without having the contrast blown out in the foreground, and with the three figures comprising stable triangle at the centre of the composition; there's also a nice balance between the horizontals (mostly set up as slight diagonals, and the verticals.

The plates for this were quite badly damaged at the edges, and I've dealt with that by cropping to remove the worst of the damage. As well, I thought I would do this one not simply because it is a second picture of ethnic Chinese travellers in the far reaches of the Russian Empire, but also because I've seen very few versions of it anywhere else. Call it pride, if you like, but I think it turned out well.

010 | To-do's.

For 365 days - take a picture of myself every day for a year.

What's on the list?

Invoice client.
Move, plant and water new plants.
Take down the Christmas tree.
Eradicate clutter from the living room.
Finish dishes.
Finish laundry.
Clean carpets.

I haven't gotten anything done the last couple of days other than starting laundry and getting half way through a pile of dishes that was monstrous from Sunday's baking and cooking. I get distracted a lot. It's an exciting day when your client puts a project on hold and you know you're not going to hear from them all day...in advance. Now I can make plans. I'm going to Get Things Done today and I started by getting my photo of myself done early. Goodbye internet!
