Many examples of jewellery from India were exhibited at the London Universal Exhibition of 1872 and this photograph may have been one of those shown to demonstrate the way it was worn. The girls in the photograph are seated on rugs and posed to show front and rear views. They may be dancers, as shown by the anklets of small bells they are wearing.
