Carpet remnants
This is at the former Mohasco carpet mill site in Amsterdam, N.Y., on March 26, 2010. The sprawling complex was largely vacant after the carpet industry moved south, and over the years has crumbled, burned down and been blown up. The structure in the background was the power house; the concrete trestle in the foreground, I think, was how the coal was delivered to it. A spur ran off the New York Central mainline in the Mohawk Valley below, up the hill, and into the complex.
We watched the biggest remaining building be destroyed with explosives several years back now; the tall smokestack for this building was blown up a few years ago, too, but the power house itself was left standing.
Vezir Han, Kayseri
The workshops in and around the Vezir Han in the Kayseri bazaars are where sheep and goat hides and wool are processed. Kayseri is a center of the carpet and kilim industry in Turkey. Finished Angora hides are also sold as throws.
