Beaulieu Racing Cars 1979

Beaulieu Racing Cars 1979

Vintage land speed record breaking cars at The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, England, UK.

Here you will find more than 250 of the world's oldest, fastest, slowest and some of the silliest cars ever made. Exhibits within the centre include Bluebird, (the car farthest from the camera) the World Land Speed record holder. On 17 July 1964, Donald Campbell set a record of 403.10 mph (648.73 km/h) at Lake Eyre in Australia, for a four-wheeled vehicle (Class A). Campbell was disappointed with the record as the vehicle had been designed for much higher speeds. Bluebird covered the final third of the measured mile at an average of 429 mph (690 km/h), peaking as it left the measured distance at over 440 mph (710 km/h).

In front of Bluebird is the 1000hp Sunbeam. The Sunbeam 1000 HP Mystery, or "The Slug", is a land speed record-breaking car built by the Sunbeam Car Company of Wolverhampton and driven by Henry Seagrave that was powered by two aircraft engines. It was the first car to travel at over 200 mph in 1926. The car's last run was a demonstration circuit at Brooklands, running at slow speed on only one engine. It is today on display at the National Motor Museum, having been presented to the new museum by Sunbeam in 1958.

Following his record-breaking success with the 1000hp Sunbeam, Henry Segrave announced a new attempt was to be made in an all-new car. The Golden Arrow (which is in front of The Sunbeam 1000) was designed by J.S. Irving and used a Napier Lion aero-engine of the Special 930bhp Schneider Trophy Type. The twelve cylinders were in a W formation. The car's low line design was achieved by the use of twin propeller shafts each side of the driver. Segrave drove Golden Arrow to a new record of 231.362mph (372.341kph) at Daytona Beach Florida on 11th March 1929.

Another of Sunbeam’s notable sporting achievements took place on 17th May, 1922 at Brooklands when Kenelm Lee Guinness broke the world land speed record at 133.75m.p.h. in an 18 litre, 350hp. ‘V12’ aero engined car seen in front here.
