lots and lots of cleanup in photoshop CS - to fix internal reflections and ccd bleed.
final tweaks and color balance in lightroom 2
comments: color subexposures were way too long, resulting in a ridiculous amount of star halo and ccd bleed on the 3 largest stars. this took a lot of work in photoshop to undo, and it's still obvious that there was a big problem there. this was especially bad in the blue channel, hence the purple cast around the big stars.
m42 luminance hdr-Edit-Edit
3 exposures; 120s, 180s and 240s separately processed in pixinsight LE and then HDR merged using photomatix pro. tweaked in lightroom, then noise reduced using topaz denoise, then halved in size with bicubic sharpen in photoshop.
these were taken with a 12" telescope located in rodeo, nm and available for rent from lightbuckets.com. the camera is an Apogee Instruments Alta U16M which is a monochrome CCD camera, 4K x 4K pixels. the CCD is cooled to -30C during imaging to reduce noise.
too bad i captured several satellites as well as the DSO...
