Single Speed Mountain Bicycles
(Mountain bicycling) Mountain biking is a sport which consists of riding bicycles off-road, often over rough terrain, using specially adapted mountain bikes. Mountain bikes share similarities with other bikes, but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance in rough terrain.
A single-speed bicycle is a type of bicycle with a single gear ratio. These bicycles are without derailleur gears, hub gearing or other methods for varying the gear ratio of the bicycle.
not to be confused with fixed gear, is form of XC mountain biking that is done using a single-speed bicycle that has only one gear (approx. 2:1 ratio) and generally fewer components. The idea is simplicity. The straight chain line provides efficient pedaling.
While any bike that doesn't have multiple gears or speeds is technically called a "single-speed" bicycle, this term generally refers to a bike with a one-speed freewheel and coaster brakes.
Williamson Single-Speed Mountain Bike Frame
Back around 1996 a bunch of friends were really on a single-speed kick. About a year later I had this frame built by a friend at Rocky Mountain. The tubeset was from a 97 Vertex T.O. if I recall correctly, drop-outs were custom too and the serial number was/is "Andrewski". I ended up racing it in a couple of the 12-hour team classics in Campbell River and then used it on the Shore a few times.
I think it's time to bring it out of retirement! Commuting SS here I come!
Forte Single Speed Chain Tensioner
Chain tensioner from the single speed conversion kit from performancebike.com
I've been using this for almost a full year now. I've biked almost every day this winter in Ottawa. It's still working very well. I have had 2 shimano hubs die from the cold (I'm too lazy to winterize them), but the tensioner has continued to work through all the snow/ice/slush/rain and SALT! Speaking of which, I will be back on the bike in 7 hrs, I'd better get some sleep!
