Kakkyo Yama, or the pot of gold, Gion Matsuri 1986

Kakkyo Yama, or the pot of gold, Gion Matsuri 1986

The Gion Festival held in July in Kyoto originates in a ceremony held in the 9th c. in the Shinsenen Pond, then part of the Imperial Palace. Halberds were carried here and dipped in the water as supplication to the gods to end an infectious disease. The festival was annually repeated and grew in size - in due time it was taken over from the court by the citizens of Kyoto. The famous floats first appeared in the Middle Ages, to please the gods with music, dance and spectacle. The lead float, Naginata Boko, still carries a halberd on the roof as reference to the origin of the festival. It is also the only one that still has a child (Chigo) as representation of the god. There are 32 hoko (carts) and yama (floats) built and maintained for centuries by local associations of merchants in central Kyoto. They are decorated with fabulous carvings and ancient Gobelin tapestries and other drapery. All floats tell a story from Chinese legend or Japanese myth.

Float with a roof. Also has a decorative upper frame painted with a flower-like motif on a gold background. Kakkyo (Guo Ju) was a poor farmer from Chinese legend who could not feed both his mother and his son. He decided to abandon his son in the woods in order not to fail in filial piety. But when digging a hole to bury his son alive, he found a pot with gold, so he could devote himself to both mother and son. The dolls on the float represent Guo Ju and his son.

This series consists of scans from slides taken in July, 1989.

Fileteado porteņo

Fileteado porteņo

Buenos Aires, Argentina

The fileteado, is a popular and decorative art typical from Buenos Aires. Its streamlined shapes are of intense colouring and they are painted so as to create the feeling of volume. Flowers, ribbons, acanthus leaves, dragons and birds are features of its repertoire, which are combined with sayings and pictures of popular characters.

Special Art works

In the same way as Tango musically defines Buenos Aires, the fileteado constitutes its iconography. Both artistic manifestations are characterized by their popular origin. Nowadays, and due to its present relevance, the ornamented painting is also an original king of design typical of Argentina and widely acknowledged abroad.

Fileteado History

The fileteado has born in the cart factories of our city in the early twentieth century. It was a decorative activity spontaneously developed by the masters of this craft, until it gradually turned into a pictorical genre. It was also used on trucks and public transport until the 70s, when it began to have a widespread use.
