Encounter Blue. Lechenaultia biloba, Western Australian Botanic Garden, Perth, Australia

Encounter Blue. Lechenaultia biloba, Western Australian Botanic Garden, Perth, Australia

The sky in Perth, Australia, this morning was bright blue and perfectly mirrored by this Lechenaultia biloba, still wet from a shower. It's native to this area, and must be a delight for everyone annually to behold!
Imagine a bay on the south-central coast of what we know today as Australia in April 1802. Two small sailing expeditions from countries at war in far-off Europe - England and France - catch sight of each other's flags. One commanded by Nicolas-Thomas Baudin (1754-1803), the other by Matthew Flinders (1774-1814). But neither was intent on warfare, and no doubt everyone was quite happy to encounter fellow-Europeans after many months at sea. The names of Baudin's ships were Geographe and Naturaliste, a clear demonstration of his papers not to fight but to map the geography and natural resources of this new world for his government. Flinders' ship was named Investigator, again clearly indicating his duty to explore the coasts and to collect specimens.
Both expeditions carried not only the necessary sailing crews, but also intrepid and later to become eminent naturalists such as the Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Leschenault de la Tour (1773-1826) and the the Scot Robert Brown (1773-1858). For the two expeditions' fortuitous meeting, Flinders named the safe berth of their ships: Encounter Bay.
The two naturalists immediately struck up a friendship. Leschenault made a great impression on Brown, and the latter later named our Blue Beauty for him. But as is sometimes the case in a quick encounter: you don't get the other name quite correctly. And so Brown missed out the 's' of 'Leschenault' when he used his name.

Perth, Western Australia.

View across the Swan River facing South West.

This is Australia Day and Perth celebrates with a huge fireworks display.

This year we were treated to a sensational sunset , a great fireworks display and to top it off the full moon rose above the city skyline at the climax of the fireworks show.

It was a little windy for great fireworks pictures though.
