Memorial statue installed at Forest Lawn
'The Shepherdess,' a bronze monument, becomes cemetery's 'signature piece'

Her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, says Mary Dewitt Smith, were gentle women who admired the sylvan beauty of Forest Lawn, the landmark cemetery where they are interred.
Mary Johnston Kittinger Diebold, Mary Dewitt Kittinger and Mary Johnston Kittinger -- all descended from Samuel Kittinger, the Buffalo pioneer whose children founded Kittinger Furniture -- were caregivers and gardeners who would have instinctively reached out to comfort mourners passing through the main gate at Delaware and West Delavan avenues, she said.
So it comes as no surprise that their memory inspired Smith's sculpture, "The Shepherdess," installed just inside the entrance, on a landscaped circle in the central roadway.
The bronze work, resting on a granite block, depicts a kneeling young woman reaching toward the gate with a welcoming rose in her right hand and a lamb nestled against her left side.
The shepherdess represents the Kittinger women, and the petals symbolize the spirits of the cemetery's inhabitants, the artist said.
The piece was donated to Forest Lawn by Smith and her husband, David. Though she regards the setting as ideal, she credits Tom Koch of Stone Art Memorial in Lackawanna for suggesting it. Smith had designed a smaller version of the same sculpture for another site, but it turned out to be an awkward fit.
When Koch approached Forest Lawn about "The Shepherdess," President Joseph P. Dispenza and board Chairman Dean H. Jewett eagerly accepted the gift.
"I thought, my gosh, that's our whole message -- kind, gentle, reaching out to families, extending a flower," Dispenza said.
"Our instinct was to put it at the entrance. Every funeral procession comes through the gate and slows down as the bell (a relic from the demolished St. Joseph's New Cathedral) tolls."
Smith, whose home and studio are in Derby, and who is known for her portraits of prominent Buffalonians, worked to complete the project for more than a year.
Meanwhile, Forest Lawn created the small planted circle where a stop sign previously stood. The unpolished granite base was quarried in Vermont and fabricated at Stone Art Memorial, which donated it for the installation.
"It will be our signature piece" among many hundreds of memorials and sculptures gracing the cemetery, and along with the tolling bell will signal mourners that "the world is stopping for you and your loved one," Dispenza said.
Smith, whose father was the late banker Charles R. Diebold, made the piece to honor her mother's side of the family.
