William Sutherland Beckett

William Sutherland Beckett was born June 14, 1921 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Yale University, graduating in 1943. Beckett moved to California after graduating and worked for Douglas Aircraft for a short time during World War II. He went to work for the firm Spaulding and Rex from 1944 to 1949, eventually achieving the title Chief Designer. Spaulding was the architect of Case Study House #2, for Arts + Architecture magazine in 1945-1947.

Mr. Beckett married fellow Kansas Citian and socialite, Julianne Kemper in 1948. She was the daughter of James Madison Kemper, Sr. and part of a prominent banking family and patrons of the arts in Kansas City.

In late 1949, Beckett went out on his own, and by 1950, he had completed his own offices, located at 9026 Melrose Avenue. The Julius Shulman photographs of this building were widely published in the architectural press. The building garnered him an AIA National Honor First Award, in 1952, one of only three given nationwide that year. This prestigious award set his reputation as an architect for stars like Charlton Heston, setting him off on a career designing many celebrity homes and businesses in Beverly Hills and throughout LA.

Eventually, William Sutherland Beckett succumbed to chronic alcoholism and died at the early age of 56 on September 21, 1977.

Kemper Residence

The residence that Architect, William S. Beckett designed for his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Mildred Kemper, in Kansas City used much of the same design vocabulary as the Raymond Evans Residence in Beverly Hills. The exterior materials were redwood, brick, glass and stucco. Like the Evans house, the Kemper Residence uses curved walls for architectural effect, with the entry door falling between the curved wall and the orthogonal house.

In true California fashion, many of the exterior materials were used on the interior to blur the inside-outside relationships of the house. The interiors were done with a fireplace and some exterior walls in brick, juxtaposed against plaster and redwood walls and ceilings. The house also featured some of Beckett’s signature built-in millwork room dividers.

Mildred decided to add on to the house after the birth of their fourth child in 1956. The Kempers hired local KC Architect, Ward Haylett and an addition was completed somewhere around 1960. The resulting addition on the back of the house allowed every child to have their own bedroom and bath. As part of the addition, a covered exterior space was enclosed to add a new large dining area.

As with many Beckett designed Houses, the Kemper home was photographed by Julius Shulman, but the photographs that remain were test shots of the late construction phases of the house taken on 10/20/1952. One can assume that Shulman photographed the home while here shooting photos of one of the other Beckett designed projects, either one of two Commerce Banks, or the Cricket West shop on the Country Club Plaza. These Kansas City projects were photographed by Shulman and are published in his three volume tome, Julius Shulman Modernism Rediscovered. No Shulman photos were found of the finished Kemper home.

Introducing... Sweetwater Precision Weapons “Terrain” G3 “Mizu” M0, the latest addition to the “Terrain” line.

After orders of a new project came in to the Sweetwater office, a newly added, young designer enthusiastically accepted the job. He had the SPW reputation to live up to.

He went to the drawing board tasked with designing a G3 capable of dealing with harsh precipitation and mud exposure.
Features he added were:

-A sealed charging handle area placed on the upper receiver

-An easy sliding bolt-cover finished in dark carbon, with engraved logo

-Iron sights with the ability to be pushed down and hidden inside the body

-A brand new rail system with rails on all four sides was added for endless customisation options

-Ergonomic grip for improved comfort

-Adjustable length stock with integrated cheek-rest

-3 stage jumbo fire selector, for use with gloves

-Sweetwater designed Flash Hider

-Top of the range optical scope for long-range targets

-Water-proof seals throughout

The result is a weapon as tough as nails. Capable of withstanding a huge temperature range, large water exposure and mud and other debris. This weapon is a true workhorse.
