Garden to Vase: Growing and Using Your Own Cut Flowers
As an accomplished gardener and professional florist, Linda Beutler offers unique insights into creating inspired floral arrangements and growing the plants that go into them. Among the topics that Beutler discusses are the philosophy of floral design; making creative use of plants you're already growing; techniques of harvesting and preparing cut flowers; "bouquet basics"; and creating arrangements for special occasions. The book culminates in "Plants for the Cutting Garden: Flowers, Foliage, and Fruit," which contains detailed descriptions of more than 200 outstanding plants. Adding greatly to the book's appeal and usefulness are Allan Mandell's breathtaking photographs of flowers in every stage from the garden to finished arrangement.

Flowers from Emma - Leap to Leap Project photo 0028
Emma bought me three bunches of flowers as I'm sick - this is one of two vases I attempted to arrange myself, this one came out quite well (yes everything artistic I try and do tends to end up symmetrical). Flower arranging is surprisingly hard - not in trying to get it to look good, just trying to get the stems to sit where you want them to, not move around after. Anyway, this was my first ever real attempt at not just shoving them in a vase as-is.
The Leap-to-Leap Project has me taking a photo each day from 29th Feb 2008 to 29th Feb 2012. This photo was taken 27th March 2008, photo 0028.

One of the activity choices in our preschool classroom is Flower Arranging. I just love to come into the room and see lovely flowers in vases all around on the tables and shelves! Beautifying the classroom is a lesson in itself -- taking care of your surroundings, caring about making the world lovely, sharing beauty that you've created. I share this little bit of beauty from my day with you!
