Valentine's Day has a spotty personal history for me. It's supposed to be the romantic holiday, but we exchanged Valentine cards in grade school and we weren't in love with everyone in our classes. We gave cards to our parents and each child received a box of chocolates. We loved each other as a family, but it was not the romantic love that is supposed to be celebrated by Valentine's Day. I do remember that Valentine's morning was for the children and Valentine's evening was for my parents - one of the few times they went out to dinner and left the children at home. I'm not positive, but I think I stopped buying Valentine's gifts and cards for my parents when I married. I don't recall if my siblings gave Valentine's gifts and cards to Dad and Mom once my siblings married.

Dad died in November of 2002. When Valentine's Day came around the following February I did not want Mom to have an empty Valentine's Day. I logged on to the PC on February 13 and ordered a floral arrangement for next day delivery. Mom called that evening after the delivery, very appreciative to have received the flowers and card. I picked up their anniversary in April, and was proxy for Dad on Valentine's and anniversary gifts for the next eight years. I think Mom received gifts and cards from my siblings, too, so she always felt remembered.

My sister and I were talking on the phone a few months ago. Both of us said the same thing - with all the things going on in our lives, neither one of us felt we had time to mourn Mom's passing. We also said that every now and then, something small would trigger memories of Mom and/or Dad.

Years ago I set reminders on FTD.com for Mom's special days. I have not logged on to FTD.com to turn off the reminders. I've been ignoring and deleting the reminders that have been in my in box the past few days. This evening, I opened the message, and thought of Mom and Dad. Their love lasted over 60 years of courting and marriage, the eight years after Dad passed away, and I believe it continues today...in heaven.

Valentine's Day also reminds me that I am divorced. The first Valentine's Day after we separated was hard. Since then, the Valentine's Days have not bothered me. One or both of the radio DJs on my morning stations have been divorced. Each year, the week leading up to Valentine's Day has segments about how to celebrate the day if you are part of a couple...and if or how to celebrate the day if you are single. I decided to do some Valentine's dedications for couples I know who are or have been in love.
