Creative Antiquing Money Secrets
Welcome To The Great Antique Hunt
For years, when friends would talk about their antique collections, I felt a little (okay, more than a little) intimidated. I used this standing joke when asked if I collected any artifacts, "Why of course! You should see the collection of dust I have at home. It's all over the house."
Since then, I've taken a second look at antiquing. I had always been a history buff, but then I found an actual historical item or two that I thought were really interesting, and that's all it took.
I was off. I had signed up, evidently, for the Great Antique Hunt. Unfortunately, I knew very little about the several pieces I initially purchased -- despite my knowledge of history. And my hunt was more like a game of pin the tail on the donkey. I felt blindfolded and as if someone had twirled me around. There I was making decisions upon which I knew very little. Needless to say, not all of them were the wisest.
In my first several months of collecting, I discovered -- looking back with that inevitable 20-20 hindsight -- how much money I actually wasted on what I thought at the time were quality antique pieces
Finally, I was able to stop myself, take my blindfold off, and just digest the hobby a bit farther. And that made all a world of difference. The next several purchases I made not only delighted me, but were appraised and valued as a smart move. (Imagine that! Me! Performing some smart moves!)
And as I sat down one evening with a cup of tea, content in my day's purchases, I wondered how many others were wandering aimlessly like I had been. And that's when I vowed to write a small compendium that would give the novice antique collector a solid beginning in the hobby and provide the veteran with a great review.
