I hated this hill
I had a minor meltdown at the base of this hill. We couldn't find the shortcut we were hoping for and instead were facing a full day of hiking (with those damn 40 lb packs). I feel like I'm strong and can take myself most anywhere, long hikes and elevation gain don't faze me, but the heavy pack was killing me. We took off our packs and contemplated what to do. Gina didn't want to stop because it was hard where I thought that was the best reason to stop. I wanted a more relaxing trip not a death march in the woods. Friday's hike was so very hard and I was afraid of Saturday & Sunday being the same.
Gina handled the situation very well and just let me vent. She's never seen me like this before (it was a rare and rough moment for me). She handed me the flask of bourbon. Shortly afterwards I said, "Ok let's go" and we put on our packs and went up the damn hill, 1000 feet of elevation gain in 1 mile. That's a lot of switchbacks! Thankfully this was followed by 4.3 miles on a fairly level trail with the most spectacular views and the most incredible campsite I've ever had. Friday would remain (thankfully) the hardest day with each day after that getting easier. Sunday, our longest hike of over 7 miles, was the easiest with a gradual elevation loss the entire way.
Later around the fire we laughed and laughed at my melodrama on the hill. "I haven't even read one page of my book!" "It's not supposed to make me want to throw myself off the mountain so Search & Rescue can take me away in a helicopter and the hospital can feed me with a tube. At least then it will stop!" When being tube fed is the more appealing alternative you know you're in a bad spot. Thankfully my miserable moment passed.
Next time I won't bring a book (a small paperback which I never did get to read even one word of). Maybe I'll just photocopy a few pages which I can then burn! That'll lessen the load. Anything to lessen the load!
