The lesser celandine (Ranunculus ficaria) is a perennial wildflower, a member of the buttercup family, and is commonly found in woodland, hedgerows and damp, open ground. It is one of the earliest plants to flower in spring, from February to May; the yellow flowers open only in sunshine. The leaves are a distinctive heart shape. Its name comes comes from the Latin 'chelidonia' (swallow); according to folklore, the flowers only bloomed when the swallows returned in spring. Its traditional English name was pilewort, from its use in the treatment of haemorrhoids. The resemblance of the tuberous roots to that medical condition was the reason it was chosen by herbalists. According to the seventeenth-century herbalist Nicholas Culpepper: "The decoction of the leaves and root doth wonderfully help piles and haemorrhoids, also kernels by the ears and throat, called the king's-evil, or any other hard wens [cysts] or tumours. Pilewort made into an oil, ointment or plaister cures piles or haemorrhoids and the king's-evil. I cured my own daughter of the king's-evil, broke the sore, drew out a quarter of a pint of corruption and she was cured without any scar at all in one week's time."The lesser celandine has been a favourite of novelists and poets, particularly William Wordsworth. "I have seen thee, high and low, / Thirty years or more", he wrote. Upon his death, a lesser celandine was to be carved on his memorial plaque at St Oswald's Church in Grasmere, but a greater celandine was carved on it by mistake.

I went out for a drive today and found a house who had flowers blooming already and had to stop to take pictures of the gorgeous flowers!!
