Growing rubies
I bought a few Saffron crocus bulbs last year and apparently it takes a year for them to bear flowers. Up they sprouted this week, hopefully with lovely red stigmas to follow.
Wikipedia tells me that to obtain 454g of Saffron stigmas would require between 50,000 - 75,000 flowers. Wholesale costs of saffron start at $US1100/kg. I guess I won't be making my fortune with this lot :)
