Rickshaw
Japan is a country of contrasts; but the old and the new complement each other
Women in traditional kimono and wooden slippers walk around the city, bringing out their DoCoMo slide phones once in awhile to reply to a text message. Teens in heavy makeup, miniskirts and high heels take their time in front of a Shinto shrine, fervently hoping for an awesome lovelife ahead of them. At train stations, business men in tailored suits bow even if they're on the phone.
Up to this day, rickshaws still have notable presence in Japan especially at tourist sites. The rickshaw, or the jinrikisha, was an important mode of transport during the Meiji Restoration as horses were restricted to military purposes only. Also, because human labor was relatively cheaper than using horses. The modern day rickshaw guys are a pleasant bunch; they smile as if the summer heat and the weight they have to carry doesn't bother them.
