2011 Bees for the New Apiary
And finally, we introduced the newest NerdAcres employees to their "home-sweatshops". These bees are a Minnesota Hygienic strain of Carniolan honey bee. These are standard 3-lb packages with queen cages. (That's approximately 12,000 bees per package)
After giving each package a good sprinkle of syrup, we opened them up and placed them into their new homes.
The queen cages were carefully inspected to insure live queens and placed into the new hives.
Some have asked about handling bees bare handed, it's not unusual for beekeepers to do so once they learn to understand the behavior of their bees. In fact there are time when it's possible to work the bees in shorts and a t-shirt with no protective gear at all. It's just like any other kind of livestock, you have to learn to read the mood of the situation - and yes, bees definitely have moods.
