The kitchen fireplace at the Amherst Humphrey House. A large fireplace was a necessity for cooking and an oven was needed alongside for baking (here you see the beehive oven on the right side). There is also an iron crane which would swing from one side of the fire chamber supporting the kettle and on the wide hearth there was room for food that needed heat for preparation or serving. The Amherst Humphrey House was organized around a central chimney system. Two other fireplaces heated the front two rooms. These were smaller and nestled back into the mass of masonry needed to contain this kitchen fireplace and oven; they all used the same central flue. The central chimney also accommodated a fireplace on the second floor. In front of the fireplace is a double drop leaf table. To the far left you will see the small bed chamber which is off the kitchen. This table folds up tiny and the chairs can store underneath. It is perfect for the narrow, small kitchens here. I really enjoyed having this in our old apartment. The kitchen was so small, I could spread out my arms and touch both walls. But, this table still fit across from the counter and it was always a gathering place for the women who we hosted in our home.
