i woke up in an unexpected funk yesterday. training it in, i didn't shoot. i didn't read. i just looked out the window, listening to lucinda williams. once i'd gotten through "car wheels on a gravel road," i switched to her more recent album, "west." i'd listened to it through maybe once or twice; this morning, avoiding the darkness in my head, i paid attention to the lyrics, the rhythms, her smoky, hungry voice.

and then a song came on that wasn't familiar to me, but i loved it from the first few strains. as the first stanza crept closer, i thought to myself, "please like the words, please like the words, please like the words..." and then she started singing, and then i rested my head against the window, and then i cried. amazing how some tears can spit out the darkness and let in the light.

see, it turns out the song was called "words."

i would rather suffer in sweet silent solitude
deathly defiant from drowning out
filthy sounds stumbling ugly and crude

deep down within me words move in phrases
frozen and still ‘til they decide
