Chinese metal mirrors such as this were polished on one side and decorated on the other. Mirrors were credited with magical powers, including the ability to ward off evil influences and to forecast the future. Brides carried them to their new homes to avoid bad luck. At funerals, mirrors were often broken in half, one each for the husband and wife, with the hope that they would be united in the next world.

Designs on mirrors were often meant to procure blessings of longevity for the living and to guide the soul of the deceased towards a better afterlife.
