We Saw Butterflies was made in honor of my Aunt Pat and her twin sister Jean who grew up mentally disabled in the 1930s and 40s. The title comes from a letter written to my grandmother that was handed down to me. The letter was apparently dictated by Pat and written down by one of her caregivers. In the letter she tells of a happy experience taking a field trip to the local zoo.
I do not remember ever meeting Pat and Jean, yet their spirits exist in my consciousness. When I was about five years old, I waited in the car outside of the mental institution where they lived while my dad visited with them. I may have seen them from afar. I know that they were gentle souls and fiercely protected and loved by my father’s family. They lived most of their lives with their family despite being at a time when metal incapacity was usually hidden and considered a disgrace. It was only later in their lives, with the failing health of my grandparents, that the family found it necessary to move them to a mental institution.
I believe that my aunts, perhaps like children, were somehow closer to nature and spirit. I chose to represent this connection with natural artifacts. Shells, naturally occurring spirals, are used to represent the cycle of life; the fossilized spiral symbolizing eternity. The feather characterizes flight/freedom/spirituality. It is bound with the plant and bone in a totemic bundle, representing spiritual power. Inside the door are butterflies – symbols of spirit, freedom, beauty and joy. The two pearls represent Pat and Jean – jewels hidden away, but very valuable – beauty formed of suffering.
I also chose to include some man-made objects that hold a special significance to my reconstructed memory of my Aunts. The button and simple cloth scrap represent touch – tactile comfort – an image I carry from the novel, The Good Earth, by Pearl Buck. The eldest Daughter of one of the main characters in this novel is a simple-minded girl who finds comfort in bits of cloth and string. The copper wire has a vague connection to electricity and the shock treatments Pat and Jean received. Mostly it is there for it’s patina and textural shape. Pat and Jean were savants when it came to doing puzzles, thus the puzzle roof tiles reflect their strength, but also remind us of life’s mysteries.
Inside the drawer is a ring - a “mother’s ring” that was handed down to me from Pat and Jean’s mother (my grandmother). A “mother’s ring” has a birthstone for each child, yet curiously the stones for Pat and Jean are absent. I know my grandma loved Pat and Jean. Why their stones are not part of her ring is an unsolved mystery to me and the reason the ring is hidden away in the drawer. At the bottom of the drawer is an image of an eye enlarged from a newspaper photo that was taken of my grandmother with her twin babies. The guardian angel charm also sits in the drawer, protecting all of us.
