On a quiet wet Wednesday evening in august cabin fever finally got the better of me, I had to get out of the house. On went my battered old converse and army surplus jacket and out I headed, into the dark. The sojun was largely uneventful apart from a strange encounter about half a mile in.



I heard a rustling in the trees which my initial interpretation of the soft sound was to think I had disturbed a roosting bird but upon looking up into the over growth I saw a small white/blue dome descending like a piece of paper to land gently on a wooden bridge crossing a trickling stream, the domes slightly tungsten glow began to bathe the bridge and surrounding area in a soft un-natural illumination,



The Dome remained on the bridge casting its un-natural light on all that fell under its gaze. Floating softly and slowly rotating like a flying saucer of old. No sound issued an eerie silence fell over me as I gazed, the tungsten rays holding my view, drawing me close, close enough to reach out and touch the glowing, pulsating silent rotating dome.



So close, close enough to touch when the air became suffocating, the temperature on this chill August night caused the air to boil and hiss maliciously, rebelling against the rapidly increasing temperature the Dome began to rotate faster and faster, spinning so rapidly the dome lost all details and grew bright lighting the closest ten meters from its centre.

Assignment:

For this assignment you are to capture the essence of calm. We all know calm when we see and feel it, but the challenge is to capture the feeling in a photograph. There are many examples in flickr to whet your imagination. I look forward to seeing all the interpretations.

WIT: I wanted an outdoor shot for the assignment but could not find a scene that seemed calm enough. The idea behind this tabletop setup was the softness of the blue, the shallow dof, and the smooth arcs of the rims. I set the wine glasses on a table with a piece of white poster board for a backdrop. I shot the image in RAW format and then had the option of flipping the white balance to tungsten to give the scene a bluish cast. I used a separate layer converted to b&w to help knock down the blue to what is shown. Cropped square. I hope it came out with some calming sense. Two of the glasses were filled with wine after the photo session. This added to the calming effect.
