The Studio 17 is a gaming notebook 17 inches, and the multimedia desktop replacement from Dell. This system can be configured with Intel Core i7 and high-end ATI Mobility Radeon compete with power systems like the Acer Aspire 8940G and Asus G51J. Dell has a trump card with the Studio 17, the first mass market mobile to offer a multi-screen option.
The careful reader may notice and review of the Dell Studio 17 last year. However, this is not the same as Studio 17. The system studied here is the new Studio 17 (1747), which uses a new design with 16:9 widescreen display, new speakers, and support the latest processors.
Construction and Design
Dell Studio 17 has a sleek wedge-shaped, which helps to mask its large footprint. The sloping design reduces the thickness of the dell inspiron 1545 battery, and if not taken into account the bulky 9-cell battery, which is significantly higher than my ThinkPad T60 when it is closed. Cover red display looks great and is also available in other colors if you set your own laptop. The cover has a rubbery texture paint gives the laptop a great soft feel and helps to increase the grip of the fingers. Inside the Studio 17 is made of plastic and polished to match the touchpad flush mounting. Cut the palm rest is painted with a metallic silver finish on the seat directly surrounding the keyboard is glossy black plastic. Both finishes resist scratches seem light, which is a blessing for laptops that need to be cleaned constantly and spotless bright clean appearance.
Specific design elements that really bothers me is the design of the battery. I much prefer the method of long-lasting batteries that extend the back of the laptop. The retail method is used to mount the battery prevents the Dell Studio 17 sits perfectly flush with the desk surface. The only problem with the use of a battery that extends from the rear with this laptop is the design of the hinge that could interfere with the extended battery.
The chassis feels very strong and when the handset is closed, it feels strong enough to be (although not recommended standing on it). Dell did a great job to improve the robustness and truly hit the mark with the precision of body panels. Each panel is in place even with the holes around the contact surfaces. These panels feel durable and resistant to bending under moderate pressure. The laptop seems on the surface in the bending of the tray for the keyboard flexes slightly under pressure.
The bottom of the laptop has a clean look, with a single access portal to the user replaceable components. Users who wish to update the Studio 17 are two drive bays, three mini-PCIe, two memory slots and the BIOS battery. The configuration of the hard drive bay and left open slot for wireless WAN and a TV tuner card. The processor and graphics card are not accessible via the main access panel, so as to change one of these would require further dismantling of the laptop. Not "void the warranty if removed" stickers were found at any location inside or outside the team.
Screen and speakers
The 17.3-inch Studio 17 is above average with excellent color saturation and contrast. Dell has a resolution of 1600x900 in the middle of this model, which is better than WXGA, but still below the 1080p displays that are standard in most models of competition. Having said that Dell offers RGB-LED screen refresh options of this model in which none of the competing models offer similar screens.
The standard screen has a good vertical viewing angles, where the colors are beginning to invest significantly until the screen is tilted 15 to 20 degrees forward or backward. Horizontal viewing angles are better with colors staying true to about 80 degrees in any direction. Background levels of light are very good in terms of lightness, brightness and even the point. With the screen showing a black background, a minimum of blood around the edges to normal light levels. With the recent 80% increase in black levels begin to appear fuzzy, but this is normal for the light panels. The backlight is strong enough to comfortably view the screen in the office or outside brilliant if you find a shady spot.
Dell Studio 17-speaker JBL stereo includes a subwoofer down firing. The main causes are first drawn through the corners to support the palms, which is much preferred shooting portable speakers can thump. In our tests, the Studio 17 speakers rated above average when playing movies and music. Notes and mid-range high-end came across clearly and subwoofer added some bass that is generally lacking in many laptops. The maximum volume is above average and more than able to fill a small to medium room with sound.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard on the Studio 17 is very nice and very comfortable to write with a palm rest mass. With the dell latitude e6400 battery sitting on the edge of a table or wrists on the knees are fully compatible with the forearm. The smooth and rounded edge at the front of the laptop does not appear to cause pressure points that can be a problem with some laptops. The keyboard maximizes the surface density of Studio 17. The keyboard is full-size keys are not condensed and includes a large number of four keys. The design is standard on Dell function keys are secondary keys and access to primary education. For example, you can adjust the brightness directly by pressing F4 and F5, but to refresh a web page, you click FN + F5. You may notice some keyboard flexible under pressure, but in an ordinary character is not so obvious. Individual key action is smooth with a gentle click any key issue when it is completely down. The configuration we reviewed does not offer a backlit display, but can be included as an option for $ 25. After using the Studio 17 a couple of nights in front of my TV that I find really hoping that the backlight came standard.
The Synaptics touchpad is a great model, with some support multitouch. Gestures are advanced two-finger scroll, rotate, zoom, pinch, and a film of three fingers. The sensitivity is excellent with the touch screen to pick up the slightest touch without any problems. This caused some problems if you brush your palm against the pavement as you move the cursor to a target. The touch screen can detect the entry of a second and to the freezing of the cursor until you leave. No amount of adjusting the settings to fix this, but with enough practice, you learn to move your hand further away from the border of the touchpad. Touchpad is very fast with no noticeable lag noticed, even in fast motion. The texture of the surface is a dull light and easy to slide your finger in the wet or dry. The touchpad buttons are also very nice with deep and launch a soft click when pressed.
Ports and Features
Selection of the doors is very good, even without the added ports or slots on the front or the rear edge of the laptop. Dell also includes two USB ports, eSATA / USB combo port VGA port, HDMI and DisplayPort, LAN, two headphone jacks, audio, LAN, and finally, one FireWire 400 port. Expansion slots ExpressCard/34 slot and includes a SDHC card reader. An additional port was not used in our setup is the antenna that connects to a TV tuner inside. We had a problem with the USB port design, the law has sufficient space separated from each other to avoid the use of some two cables.
Dell Studio 17 includes an accelerometer that protects the hard drive in case of failure of the physical system. If it detects that the laptop is falling rapidly stops the hard drive to minimize the damage. This is common in many business notebooks, but unlike other applications we've seen, this was the first to cause problems. If the laptop is too thin in any direction, will directly influence the direction of movement on the screen. First noticed during our test phase when the handset is resting in an elevated position. If Studio 17 is tilted forward selection dialog random switch. If the handset is tilted to one side starts to move the selection box from top to bottom. The only way to solve this problem is to uninstall the drivers ScreenDection ST Micro. This issue also reported on the Dell community forum.
Performance and benchmarks
Dell Studio 17 is no exception with its Intel Core i7 720QM and ATI Mobility Radeon 4650. When playing Left 4 Dead with a resolution of 1600x900 with high-speed settings that saw an average of 60 fps, up to 87FPS, 38FPS and lower. Even with the hordes of zombies around the main characters always dropped below 30FPS laptop. Although this system is capable of playing Left 4 Dead with high values still fell behind G51J ASUS and Acer 8940G, which includes better graphics card. Since the Studio 17 laptop is a result all centered around the media who do not have a big problem with that. The disadvantage is that users need to update or go to the Studio XPS 16 Alienware M17x options for better graphics card from vgp-bps9 s battery. Both alternatives have a much higher early - about $ 1,600 - can be difficult to digest if you work on a smaller budget. HD video has not been a problem for the Studio 17 with Core i7 running at 1.6 GHz. The processor has not broken a sweat playing 720p and 1080p, with plenty of space in the upper left for other activities.
Heat and noise
The thermal performance of the Dell Studio 17 is above average when you consider that an individual fan is responsible for cooling a quad-core processor, and mid-range graphics cards. In the normal operating temperature if kept at reasonable levels, with a few hot spots. Stress in some areas near the processor and the touchpad is warm but not uncomfortable levels. Fan noise is minimal in all conditions, but becomes sharper and more frequent under the load.
Battery
Our approach to Studio 17 includes a 9-cell Fujitsu Lifebook t4210 Battery that helped tighten an impressive time of this laptop Core i7 equipped. In our battery test with screen brightness at 70%, wireless enabled and Windows 7 in the equilibrium profile of the laptop is left for 4 hours and 19 minutes. When testing the Studio 17 uses between 17 and 19 watts of power.
Conclusion
Dell Inspiron 17 has worked very well as a laptop-oriented multimedia pa3534u 1brs replacement. The system includes everything you want, including great speakers, nice display options, a fast processor and a graphics card capable. Compared to the Acer 8940G G51J ASUS or NVIDIA 260M and 250M offer, respectively, the Studio 17 remains behind in gaming performance with lower performance ATI Mobility Radeon 4650. No other higher scorecard can be configured with Studio 17, which means you must jump for the Studio XPS 16 and Alienware m17x, which have much higher starting prices. In general, 17 sweeps competition in the study of customization options - including a choice of RGB LED-backlit panel or touch screen - and offers a low entry price for the installation of the Core i7. Keeping this system in your list if you intend to buy a laptop 17 "anytime soon.
