Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 Review

Lenovo has recently updated the Y Series line of laptops, adding that the 14-inch 15.6-inch Y460 and Y560 in the ensemble. These new models offer faster graphics options than its predecessors, with an ATI Radeon 5650 and ATI Radeon 5730 Y560 Y460 overcrowded. This review looks at the lower of the two notebooks, the IdeaPad Y460, to see how it compares to competition.

Construction and Design

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 seems new completely redesigned from the previous generation. The outer shell is a similar model of the black finish with an orange border, but now it is a big chrome hinges, instead of hiding before. Inside, above the keyboard bezel and white changed to a glossy black finish Compaq HP nc6400 battery covered with bronze. The interior of all whites in the old model was hard to swallow for most people and I think the new image is much better. Other design elements of new Y460 new JBL speakers on the screen and matte satin cover, and contributes only to hide his fingerprints.

Build quality is very good for a consumer notebook with durable plastic panels and the display hinges strong. Paint and plastic finishes seem to resist scratches and abuse rules cover only the plot does a good job of hiding fingerprints. Wrist rests and the touchpad has a good support sections with little or no damage. The keyboard on the other side has some damage on top of the optical drive, but you do not really realize until you try to enter your laptop in this section. The underside of the notebook is loaded with many the only means of cooling fans, which indicates that the system could be designed for a large amount of air flow under the load.

Users who want to upgrade components will be easy on the IdeaPad Y460. Lenovo has three access panels on the underside of the notebook, which contains the Wi-Fi, WWAN slots, hard drives, system memory, the processor and heatsink. A curious feature is the Wi-Fi can be accessed without using a screwdriver. The lid is secured with a latch, which I think is used to access the SIM card slot to access the bay. The other covers are in place by screws that hold the ring falls to unscrew the laptop.

Screen and speakers

The IdeaPad Y460 has a view option, a 14-inch WXGA panel. With its high-end graphics performance option and inspiration components that were kind of hope WXGA + (1440x900) and HD + (1600x900). The lower resolution panel, of course, cheaper than the price may be a factor, but I personally pay more for the option if you gave me. The rate of media panel with good color and contrast, but less than some high-end displays that can be found in an Apple MacBook or the like HP. A record level of backlight were measured a maximum brightness of 218nit, which is high for indoor advertising, but not really bright enough to see outside. Combined with the shiny surface of the screen is difficult to see out unless they have been fine with a little shade of a building or tree.

The IdeaPad Y460 has a competitive advantage in the 14-inch laptop when he comes on board speakers. JBL and Lenovo together to design the audio system of Y460 and easily fits in better than average for the category. You do not have the deep bass of a large notebook with a dedicated subwoofer, but the drivers do a good job in the JBL audio and media quality. The maximum volume levels are good for a piece of small and medium enterprises, which is ideal for enjoying a movie in a room or small office. Travel headphones are still highly recommended for use at home and suggest you use the HDMI connection to a stream of digital audio data to a home theater system.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Lenovo keeps the same keyboard layout in the Y460, with the main change from the previous model is the transition of all the white keys to all blacks. The keyboard is full size design with all the functions without a password in the top row number. Unlike many manufacturers these days seem to opt to take the road to act as a secondary function row, Lenovo kept the old standard. Another good design feature is the location and design of the Toshiba satellite p300 battery, in the end the page and page down to the keyboard. They are easy to find and very useful if you make a lot of work to an office productivity.

The keyboard itself feels very comfortable to type on, and requires light to moderate pressure to activate each key. Chiclet keyboard is almost comforting to see with most manufacturers take this route for newer laptops. The noise is minimal password each time you press a button emits a soft click when the key is fully activated.

The laptop also has touch media quick launch buttons below the screen. The most interesting button is a scroll bar that allows you to quickly launch one of eight programs of their choice. The bar is also used to activate other functions of Lenovo as a way to lock the screen, touch the screen changes, and exchange work.

Lenovo includes a large multi-touch enabled touchpad Synaptics Y460. Supports two-finger scrolling film, pinch, zoom, rotation, and three fingers. The touch surface is a glossy surface texture that matches the color of the palm rest and small dots printed on the end. The section on traveling with a single finger is defined with a sweet orange spots and the vertical bar. Sensitivity was excellent box, but need to be adjusted slightly downward, because he was too sensitive for my taste. The touchpad buttons are large and offer excellent results. Have a good trip and give off a slight click when fully pressed.

Ports and Features

Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 has a good selection of ports and HP g60 battery, making use of every inch of space around the perimeter. The system offers three USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA / USB combo port HDMI and VGA, Ethernet and audio. The system also includes a SDHC card reader, an ExpressCard/34 slot and a DVD burner. Out to include DisplayPort or FireWire me.

Performance and benchmarks

IdeaPad Y460 performance is simply amazing. IntelCore i5 combined with the ATI Radeon 5650 is capable of handling all that we met and still keep the frame rate in the big games. Given its size and weight that you put in front of the laptop like a MacBook Pro 13.3-inch, which blows most competitors out of the water.

When run in graphical mode the system relies on integrated Intel GMA HD can handle everything except games. For day to day is recommended to grind the system remains in this mode because it keeps the temperature low and the case is still ongoing decoding of HD video and other multimedia tasks with ease. HD movie decoding was a problem decoding 720p and 1080p trailers without breaking a sweat. Flash HD playback was another area that was not a problem for the IdeaPad Y460.

Returning IdeaPad dedicated graphics turned this into a mobile gaming platform supported by the ATI Radeon 5650. To test the operation is used to play Left 4 Dead 2 laptops running at the native resolution of 1366x768 with AA off and vertical sync on. The results speak for themselves:

Media images per second were right in what we consider a set soft and the territory in which many problems can start to ramp anti-aliasing. With AA as possible (and film grain), the system remains in the range of 60 FPS frame rate. The only thing missing from this laptop is a hard drive or SSD 7200, making it perfect and complete. Lenovo 5400 comprises a disc which is great for normal, but the system receives a boost in speed with a faster hard drive. Given the current retail price of $ 999 Lenovo still leaves much room for upgrades to the end user.

The heat and noise

Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 temperature profiles has two main components: a polite and friendly. With switchable graphics, integrated Intel graphics by defining the system as a whole is still relatively fresh and as hot as most laptops with smaller standard voltage processors HP pavilion dv2000 battery. Once turned in dedicated graphics mode things start to heat up, especially if you play. While playing Left 4 Dead 2, we observed a significant increase in outlet temperature on the left side of the keyboard and the bottom of the chassis near the pool. The photos were taken immediately after 15 to 20 minutes of play:

Much of the fund was greater than 110 f and located in small punctate spots. With him in the womb is certainly feeling the heat in the legs and hands. Taking into account the thermal requirements of the Core i5 and ATI Radeon 5650 in a small car, I'm not sure that the result would have been different in another set of 14 inches. With the amount of energy available to think that most people are interested in a gaming laptop 14 inches to a small amount of heat to the impressive framerates.

Battery

Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 has the advantage of the graphics selectable when it comes to battery life. For those occasions when performance is not a system problem, the user can change the mobile graphics integrated in their environment and save energy. We tested the Y460 two ways to see how the gains of users, while locked in integrated graphics mode. With the screen brightness down to 70%, wireless enabled and update a Web page every 60 seconds, and Windows 7 with a balanced profile Y460 lasted 4 hours and 52 minutes. The same test with the laptop closed in dedicated graphics mode only slept two hours and 59 minutes.

Conclusion

For fans of the mobile games market is beginning to be loaded with many options. At that time one of the most popular is the Compaq HP 6710b battery , which has its own in most games, but still a bit of CPU power in the department, despite its latest range of low voltage Intel Core processors. The Lenovo IdeaPad U460 offers the power of a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 and an ATI Radeon 5650 graphics card in a system that weighs less than 5 pounds (about a pound heavier than the M11x).

The performance of the game was suspended with the Radeon 5650, the management of Left 4 Dead 2 with full settings and still get a rate of more than 60 FPS. Synthetic is also very high, well above other systems of similar size. When not playing with the system receives about five hours of battery life when you set the mode integrated graphics, which is good enough for a laptop with a 14-inch six-cell battery. In general, for a price of $ 999 could not be happier with the Lenovo IdeaPad Y460.
