Frank had started on the News straight out of school as a cub reporter with starry eyes. Typically, on the day a train carrying Mahatma Gandhi happened to stop for five minutes in Trinity Street Station, Frank had elbowed his way through the crowd until within hailing distance of the sage.
"Mr Gandhi, sir," he called. "Have you a message for the people of Bolton?"
Gandhi looked him in the eye.
"No," he said, and the train steamed away.
