To properly disconnect the external monitor, put the Apple a1078 computer to sleep and disconnect the monitor cable from the computer. Open the lid and the computer will reactivate the internal monitor.

Some DVI monitors, including Apple's aluminum-framed DVI monitors, can be unplugged without putting the computer to sleep. If you aren't sure whether your monitor supports this feature, put your computer to sleep before unplugging the monitor
