Italian GP 2010: Saturday in Monza: Sebastian Vettel Q&A: I’m not sure what went wrong

Q: Sebastian, obviously this qualifying session was not really to your liking. All weekend you’ve been at the front, but in qualifying the gap widened quite a lot. Do you have any explanation for that?
Sebastian Vettel: No, not really. On Friday it looked good all day and this morning also, so what happened this afternoon is something that we have to analyze. The car was good in the corners but I have no clue why we lost so significantly on the straights. I was always a bit faster than Mark (Webber) with the same wing - at least on Friday - and then in qualifying I am four km/h slower on the straight. Put two and two together and you have the lap time that I did. But in general I would say that we’ve not been as competitive as we should be and that was a bit disappointing. I felt very good in the car Friday and Saturday morning - it was only in qualifying when the hiccups started.

Q: You will begin the race alongside McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, who is currently leading the drivers’ championship. What are your tactics for the race?
SV: Let’s wait and see. We know that on the straights we probably are not the fastest, but then anything can happen in a race, especially on such a demanding track. In fact everybody was a bit surprised about where Ferrari suddenly found that speed, so let’s wait and see if they can keep up this level in the race. It’s paramount for me to finish the race.

Q: Does that mean that your tactic will be to play it safe to bring home as many points as possible?
SV: I will always attack if there is the chance to gain positions. If the chance is not there it means that I should be patient and wait to see how the race develops. One safety car can twirl standings and eliminate gaps…

Q: How will you approach the start of this race?
SV: There are five cars in front of me and if I understand the critics correctly, I should blaze a trail in the first lap, so let’s see if I do that or if I can brace myself. What happened in Spa is history -tomorrow is another race and I am going into it feeling pretty relaxed.

Q: What result would see you leave this track in a happy mood?
SV: Ideally I would want to win. But the odds of doing that, starting from P6, are a bit difficult - at least more difficult than from the front row. As I just said, here anything can happen - apart from probably rain. I don’t expect rain for the race. Unfortunately!
