Srdačan pozdrav svim sadašnjim i budućim slikaricama i slikarima,

Dear Haiku Friend,

This May will mark the 10th year anniversary of my Haiku of Kobayashi Issa website. As part of a month-long celebration, I'd like to post your messages to Issa. These can be in the form of short notes addressed to Issa, telling him what he means to you--and, if you feel inspired, a haiku on any topic.

Along with these messages and haiku, I'm planning some other special surprises for my website in May--so be sure to stop by!

Winners of the Fish Short Story Prize and Shortlist for One-Page Prize

Jane Camens is the first Australian to win the Fish Short Story Prize. Competition judge Ronan Bennett chose her story 'A Matter of Luck', a story of a poet/civil servant in Macau, over second placed 'The Birthday Book' by Eve Vamas. He said that there was little to chose between them and that Jane got it by a short head. Eve will be enjoying a weeks retreat at Anam Cara Writer's and Artist's Retreat as second prize winner. Third place went to Stef Pixner for 'The Sort of Luck that Happens to Curtis' Stef's story 'The Window Kisser' is also among the seven runners-up, who are as follows:-

Stef Pixner

The Window Kisser

Gabriel Valjan

Back in the Day

Gabriela Blandy

Playing With Guns

Ingrid Baier

The Best Laid Plans

Wendy Dranfield

Blue

Bernadette M Smyth

Sightseeing in Louth

Jacob M Appel

Ghost Wedding

Congratulations to all of these writers, who were selected from a total of 1,800 entries.

The anthology of winning stories, along with poems and flash fiction from our other competitions, will be launched at the West Cork Literary Festival on Wed 7 July. All are welcome.

The Shortlist for the 2010 Fish One-Page Prize is now on the Fish website. There were 1,500 entries to this competition, and as usual the challenge of the very short form has thrown up some intriguing results. This is a deceptively difficult form to master. The rules are different to Short Story writing. It is also a relatively new form that many writers have not yet come to grips with. Fish will post some pointers on the website within the next weeks, along with an online course in Flash Fiction.

The winners of the One-Page Prize will be announced, along with the winners of the Fish Poetry Prize, on the website on 30 April.

· Rhys Davies Short Story Competition anthology to be published by Leaf Books.

Leaf Writers' Magazine Launch – featuring Simone Mansell Broome, Holly Howitt, Jasper Fforde and the Leaf Books Team

This spring, Leaf Books sprouts the first issue of their brand new publication – The Leaf Writers’ Magazine – for emerging creative writers. The first edition is due out any day now – there have been a few hold-ups due to untimely software failures but it’s now with the printer and is expected back in good time for the Launch on April 27th. Many thanks to everyone who pre-ordered a copy, and we thank you for your patience: you will receive your copy/copies as soon as they’re in their hands, so hopefully within a very few days. We’d love to hear your opinions of the magazine when you’ve had a look at it – contact us at the address below.

The launch party will take place on Tuesday April 27th 2010 at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff – make sure you’re there to celebrate the beginnings of this exciting new writers’ resource!

Starting at 7.30pm on the Glanfa Stage, the launch will include lively performances and talks from Jasper Fforde, Simone Mansell Broome and Holly Howitt, who are all included in the first issue. Leaf Books will also be announcing the winners of their Wales themed writing competition, to be published in an anthology later this year.

There’ll also be chance to mingle and meet with other writers and literary enthusiasts and to meet the Leaf Team.

So what’s in the Leaf Writers’ Magazine?

Between the rich green covers of Issue 1, guest contributors Jasper Fforde, Sheenagh Pugh and Roselle Angwin share their writing experiences and wisdom. They are set alongside writing and literary commentary from emerging voices in poetry and short fiction.
The magazine also serves as an informative directory for the latest course and event listings, opportunities, competitions and ideas for literature lovers.

‘I believe this magazine will fill a valuable niche in the ecology of writing in Wales... the creative work they publish [is] well worth reading’ - Phillip Gross, T.S. Eliot Poetry Prize Winner and Creative Writing Course Leader at University of Glamorgan.
‘The magazine offers excellent first publishing opportunities for creative writing students’ - Shelagh Weeks, Cardiff University Tutor

The Leaf Books Team is confident that this resource will promote and encourage new writing to bloom throughout Wales and further afield.

The Leaf Writers’ Magazine is available from the Leaf Books website, and will also be on sale in the Cardiff Waterstones store. A single issue costs Ł6, a yearly subscription Ł15. Visit the Leaf Books website for information on how to purchase and submit to the magazine.

*NEW* Ten minute writing exercise competition

A tantalising extract from the first edition of the Leaf Writers’ Magazine. Send us a short poem (20 lines or fewer) or up to 300 words of prose inspired by this writing exercise:

This is a good way to get into the habit of conveying information by showing rather than telling. Think of a person you know well and write a brief piece (a paragraph or two; maybe a short poem) that tells the reader something about that person’s character … but without using adjectives, adverbs or abstract nouns. So if your chosen person is kind, for example, you cannot simply say ‘She is kind’, ‘She acts kindly’ or ‘She shows kindness’: you have to demonstrate her kindness through her actions, for example through laying the table, folding clothes or through the way this person interacts with others. You could also try describing a person’s room in a way that reveals something about their character – a slew of biscuit crumbs in the bed is as informative as any abstract noun.

The winning entry will be published in the next edition of the Leaf Writers’ Magazine, and the winner will receive Ł150 and a free copy of the magazine.

Judging for the Memoir Competition is still in progress. We had to concentrate our efforts on edition one of the Leaf Writers’ Magazine, but we hope to announce the results of this competition in the May newsletter. The winner will receive Ł200 and a free copy of the anthology. The runner-up will receive a free copy of the anthology and a full set of Leaf mini-books. All selected pieces will be published in the anthology. Keep an eye on the website for further details.

The Wales Themed Competition has been judged and all winners have been informed. The results will be announced at the Leaf Writers’ Magazine launch and in the May newsletter.

Note: Relevant to all competitions that result in the production of an anthology. We always used to send every author featured in the anthology a free copy of the book, but due to general funding crises we will only be sending free copies to the winner and runners up and then all the other selected authors will be able to buy the book at a discounted price. We’re deeply sorry about that: rest assured, we would if we could.
