In a line of yet another "girl's night out," the gals and I hit the movies tonight for a viewing of the most recent adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. I will preface this by saying, it stars Kiera Knightly as Elizabeth Bennett. Were we in for a treat??
As many of you may already know, the girls and I have a passion for the real Mr. Darcy...Colin Firth. Dreamy, sexy, and oh so brooding, he IS Mr. Darcy. This new guy....he is nothing but a sad, pitiful imitation Darcy. Besides the fact that Lizzie always looks like she wants to take a chunk out of Mr. Darcy's neck (Kiera Knightly has fang teeth) she is constantly dishelvled and entirely over-dramatic. It is a sad day when Kiera Knightly carries most of the scenes that she is in. The writers took some liberties with the story line that made, well all of us shudder. If you remember the part where Lizzie visits Pemberley with her Aunt and Uncle and stares at the painting of Mr. Darcy...you will be sad to know that in this version, the painting has been replaced with a BUST!!!! Gina nearly lost it laughing out loud at Lizzie staring at the creepy bust of Mr. Darcy. Also, his first proposal is dramatized to the nines by changing the setting to a rainstorm. When the appropriate time for the proposal passed, we all went WTF?? only to have it added in later. And that Mr. Collins....he's just sad.
Besides, the acting, there were several parts of the movie that could have easily been cut for what one could care to call "content." Lizzie is reduced to staring in a mirror numerous times throughout the movie and a nauseating sequence of her spinning on a swing. It would have been most lovely to have some of Lydia's story (which was nearly left out entirely) in this dead time.
The good stuff.....
Mr. Bingly is dead on. He may be as good or possibly a bit better than Mr. Bingly from the 6 hour BBC version.
Donald Sutherland (in the five minutes he was on screen) was delightful as Mr. Bennett
Judi Dench (as always) was wonderful.
The costumes were beautiful and the camera work of the English countryside was quite nice.
As was said after the movie....if this had not been based on anything, it would have been quite nice. As it is...Matthew MacFayden is no Mr. Darcy.
As a consolation prize...here is our beloved Mr. Darcy.
