A.A. Bondy's sophomore album, When The Devil's Loose, will be released September 1, 2009 on Fat Possum. This is the second offering of neo-folk tunes from the former Verbena frontman. After an excellent showing at Sasquatch this year Bondy is set to take on the open road with a string of dates. Be sure to catch him when he comes through a city near you.

Just evoking the images of traditional Americana wasn't enough for former Verbena front man A.A. (Scott) Bondy on his newest record. He had to dream them. Somewhere in his head a slightly bleak, sleepy world of American imagery, dark images made their way onto When The Devil's Loose, with painfully beautiful ballads and acoustic tunes.

The problem is, the entire disc blends together as one long, saddening howl. It's sure to put you in a reflective state. When The Devil's Loose isn't the album you play in the car with your friends. It's what you play when you're taking a long ride, alone on a nearly empty highway.

Bondy's music is something like Ryan Adams meets Sufjan Stevens. Calming acoustic melodies find western influences and are completed with a gritty-yet-pleasant voice.

The title track stands out from the rest with simple storytelling and life lessons bleeding from the lyrics. "The Coal Hits The Fire" ends the album on a dark note with a marching anthem that sounds like it could have been recorded in a cave.

Overall, Bondy's pain accomplishes something spectacular on When The Devil's Loose, but we'd like to see him expand his happy horizons.
